â gaã©tan barrette, president of the quebec federation of medical specialists, called the government's plan to cut the number of specialists on the island of montreal "totally ridiculous."photograph by: marie-france coallier, gazette file photomontreal - montrealers who are already frustrated with long waits to see medical specialists may not be pleased to know that by 2011 the quebec government apparently wants to cut the number of specialists on the island of montreal. calling the idea potentially "disastrous," the quebec federation of medical specialists has vowed to do whatever it takes to fight a plan that president gaetan barrette dismissed as "totally ridiculous." barrette said yesterday he was informed of the government's intentions just last month and has been meeting with flabbergasted specialists to tell them what was proposed. he said it was the most aggressive proposal he's seen come out of quebec city, and that he was told by government officials "too many people have to cross the bridges and come on the island to get treatment." although barrette said there are no concrete figures from the government, he estimates about a 10-per-cent cut in on-island specialists - yet an increase in off-island specialists. with thousands of medical specialists working on-island, barrette said, that would mean hundreds fewer in the city's important teaching hospitals. as proposed to barrette, the plan would have two main tactics for cutting the number of specialists on the island: no specialists would be replaced if they retire or move, and no new positions would be available in any specialty. marie-eve bedard, an aide to health minister yves bolduc, said yesterday a committee made up of specialists and ministry representatives always works together to decide on the allocation of specialists. "it is something that is done in partnership, but we always work to assure uniform accessibility in quebec," she said. another spokesperson for the ministry, nathalie levesque, said the allocation of specialists is not something that is decided unilaterally on the part of the ministry. she said plans for 2011 are still under discussion and would likely be decided in the fall. although barrette acknowledged the plan is not a fait accompli, he found it alarming enough that he's been talking to specialists about it and has been getting people on board for a fight. barrette said when the proposal was made to his organization in june, he immediately stated his opposition and it still remains to be seen what will happen. he said it bothers him that it appears to be a political decision that aims to please the off-island population. "but it will be disastrous for the island and bad for teaching hospitals," barrette said. "it's a bad call. our teaching hospitals are always in competition with other hospitals elsewhere in canada and the academic life of these institutions might be at stake." officials from the mcgill university medical school said they had no comment yesterday. however, paul brunet, president of the council for the protection of patients, said he didn't think cutting specialists on the island was such a bad idea. nor does he believe it would be so disastrous for the island of montreal. "if it is a plan that adequately supports the needs of patients off the island of montreal, it could actually make it less crowded in montreal," he said. "we have always asked for equity for all regions." kseidman@thegazette.canwest.comâ© copyright (c) the montreal gazetteâ â â e-mail this articleprint this articleshare this articleâ â â more on this storyâ mcgill will no longer require mcatâ story toolsâ e-mail this articleprint this articleshare this articleâ font:*****â image:****â â â
